Elk Meadow Park
Jefferson County Open Space park where, the county says, elk herds are most likely to be seen. Trails range from meadow loops to the 4.7-mile climb to 9,708-foot Bergen Peak. Two trailheads.
A Jefferson County Open Space park on the north side of Evergreen, named for the elk herds that the county calls more likely to be seen here than anywhere else in its system. The hard hike is from the Stagecoach Boulevard trailhead to the 9,708-foot summit of Bergen Peak: 4.7 miles with 2,100 feet of climbing.
There are two trailheads: Stagecoach (32281 Stagecoach Boulevard), rebuilt and reopened on 25 October 2025 with a new restroom, a safer road crossing, a bigger lot and EV chargers, and Lewis Ridge (2851 Bergen Peak Drive). The Pioneer Trail crosses the park on its way from Bergen Park to Evergreen Lake; the map link is the county’s Pioneer Trail map. The rebuilt Elk Ridge Trail is now a mile of gently rolling multi-use trail in place of a steep, eroded half mile.
Hours follow the county rule for Open Space land, closed from one hour after sunset to one hour before sunrise unless posted, and dogs must be leashed (Park Regulations, read 6 October 2026). The phone is the county Parks & Open Space office in Golden.
